Amalienborg is the residence of the Danish Monarchs, named after a Danish Queen - Sofie Amalie who had a small pleasure palace on this location, which burned down in 1689. Originally the palace consisted of 4 matching manor houses built by and belonging to 4 noble families. They were granted exception from taxes for a number of years but were obliged to build their homes identically alike to suit the architectural taste of the period. (second half of the 1700''s) In the centre of the square you see an equestrian statue of King Frederik V, during whose reign the buildings were erected. This statue was carried out by the French sculptor Jacques Saly and presented in 1771. The manors: 4 in number consisting of a central building and two wings finished off by corner pavillions. Moltkes Manor also called the Manor of Christian VII, to-day the guest house of the reigning monarch - completely restored and repaired by the present Queen Margrethe II who presented it to the Danish public during the Summer of 1996 - they had through their taxes participated in financing the project. Schacks Manor Manor of Christian IX in the southeastern part of the complex was taken over by the Crown Prins Frederik VI so that he could be near his reigning father Christian VII - of feeble mind ? for which purpose the wooden colonade was added in classic style - this is the present day residence of Queen Margrethe II. Levetzau Manor Manor of Christian VIII - to-day the residence of Crown Prins Frederik - the future Frederik X - and also the premises holding a small exhibition of belongings and rooms of the Glücksborg Dynasty - from Christian IX to his greatgrandson Frederik IX, father of the present Queen. Brockdorfs Manor Manor of Frederik VIII - since 1934 residence of the late King Frederik IX - father of Queen Margrethe. ![]() Amalienborg Palace1257 København K Place: Amalienborg Slotsplads, kbh Phone: +45 33401010 Fax: +45 33401111 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
